I've got a query that comes up with a dataset list in < 3 seconds when
run just in DataSheet mode...but the same query, when run as intended
(Append to an empty table) takes upwards of 30 minutes to run.
The target table is via an ODBC link to a temporary DB on the user's
C: drive.
The source tables are a mixture of Oracle, Sybase, and JET tables -
all via ODBC links. Each component of the query comes up very
quickly when run by itself AND all the components together come up
pretty quickly when run just in "Select" mode - it's only when the
query has to append it's output that it slows to a crawl.
I've never seen this before.
Anybody have any thoughts?

The datasheet for a select query will pop up after only a few dozen rows
are retrieved whereas the append query has to process ALL of the rows.
What does the select query do if you open the datasheet and then do a
go-to-last?

Access tells me that it can't execute a select query...? Its a make
table query not a select? Or are those two the same.
Bottom line is that the DoCmd.OpenQuery alowes the user to see the

I previously posted about a problem where it seemed that changing the
case of the word "BY" in a SELECT query was causing it to run much much

Now I've hit the same thing again, where basically almost any change I
make to how the query is executed (so that it still performs the same
