Query runs quickly as Select, slowly as Append?

I've got a query that comes up with a dataset list in < 3 seconds when
run just in DataSheet mode...but the same query, when run as intended
(Append to an empty table) takes upwards of 30 minutes to run.

The target table is via an ODBC link to a temporary DB on the user's
C: drive.

The source tables are a mixture of Oracle, Sybase, and JET tables -
all via ODBC links. Each component of the query comes up very
quickly when run by itself AND all the components together come up
pretty quickly when run just in "Select" mode - it's only when the
query has to append it's output that it slows to a crawl.

I've never seen this before.

Anybody have any thoughts?

The datasheet for a select query will pop up after only a few dozen rows
are retrieved whereas the append query has to process ALL of the rows.
What does the select query do if you open the datasheet and then do a
go-to-last?

All, Problem Summary: I've running about 30 make table queries via VBA in Access 2000, and my database goes from 14,000k to over 2,000,000k. In addition, the longer the procedure runs, the bigger the performance hit VBA takes. I'm wondering how to prevent or reduce this. Details: I have a database table of queries I want to run. This table contains the query name, the SQL text of the query, the name of the target table, and whether...

Dear group, I got excellent help here a while back in optimizing a slow query, so I thought I'd try again with another one... I have a small table, around 3000 rows with two columns. One is a timestamp and the other is an integer. Each day, a number of entries are created, with integers ranging from 1 to 5. I need to find how many entries with the integer of 3 are created per

Hi, I use this command to run a make table query without opening it... CurrentDb.Execute "make table query name" Access tells me that it can't execute a select query...? Its a make table query not a select? Or are those two the same. Bottom line is that the DoCmd.OpenQuery alowes the user to see the query and I don't want that... Anything else I could use other then Currentdb.execute?

My problem: I'm having trouble with a query taking much too long to run; a query without any criteria evaluating only 650 records takes over 300 seconds to run (over the network. On local drive takes 120 seconds). The Setup: I'm running Access 97 non-developer edition. I have exactly zero other tools to use and no way to change that =(. My database is compiled and resides on a network drive. The database has not been split into a...

I have a form with a subform. When there are no entries in the subform, I have an append query which makes a default entry in the subform (for what I am doing there needs to be at least one value in the subform). The code in the form is this: Private Sub Form_AfterInsert() If Me.strWholeStr = 0 Then DoCmd.SetWarnings False

I previously posted about a problem where it seemed that changing the case of the word "BY" in a SELECT query was causing it to run much much faster. Now I've hit the same thing again, where basically almost any change I make to how the query is executed (so that it still performs the same function) causes the performance to jump from a dismal 7 or 8 seconds to instantaneous. It's a very simple query of the form: SELECT Min(MyValue)...

Hello all, So I'm knee deep in this import utility program, and am coming up with all sorts of "gotcha's!". 1st off. On a "Find Duplicates Query", does anyone have a good solution for renaming the duplicate records? My thinking was to take the results of the duplicate query, and somehow have it number each line where there is a duplicate (tried a groups query, but "count" won't work), then do an update query to change the duplicate to...

This is a new problem for me: I have some queries that open very slowly in design view. My benchmark query takes about 20 minutes to open in design view. That same query takes about 20 minutes to open in datasheet view. As an experiment, I deleted all rows in all tables; after that, the query took only seconds to open in both design view and datasheet view. From these facts, I conclude that Access is evaluating the query when I go to...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
