at wit's end about corrupted Access 2k records: followup

Thanks for the many responses to my original posting on 2/13 in which I
asked for help about record corruptions which were occuring in a Access 2k
table. After reading, printing and reading again all these postings, it was
clear that the first thing I needed to do was double check that all
computers had the latest version of msjet40, and that all Office updates
were applied.

After rechecking computers, I found several that did not have the latest
msjet version. Also, approximately 15 out of 20 computers did not have
Office 2000 SR1a or higher. These problems have all been remedied and
thusfar (holding my breath), no more corrupted records.

I might also mention that our agency has approximately 25 networked
computers. There is no IT department, no IT person; just me, a licensed
pscyhologist who (usually) enjoys computers and technology, and who tries to
keep our aging fleet of desktops up to date while working a full time job.
And no insight from the beaurocrats in the State government by which I'm
employed that things need to be different. If it wasn't for newgroups like
this one I (and the people that depend on me) would be up the creek without
a paddle.

Yup, they're part of the problem, not the solution.

I had a client, who was a Member of Parliament in Canada, equivalent to congress
critter in the US who had a member of the Parliament IT department visit to solve a
problem. This is about '95 or so. He noticed that they had colour monitors which
according to his inventory they should've had monochrome. Sure enough a few weeks
later monochrome VGA monitors were delivered. A few days later someone from the IT
dept arrived to unpack and set them up and take the colour ones back. Said person
was thrown out of the office.

You're lucky, that's all. And your troubles will be back in short order
because you got really bad advice from some of the founding members of
Access Morons. What they should have told you is to ditch your current
system. You should be running ONE copy of Access on ONE machine. It's
called Microsoft Terminal Services.
