should this ng become moderated?

I am not familiar with how an ng becomes moderated but this seems to be the
de-facto place for ms-access help and it is filled with noise which detracts
from the mission. It would seem it should become a moderated site for the
sake of the community here.

Any comments?

Where do you draw the line? Disruptive posts from anon remailers? All
OT posts (such as this one <g>)? If someone posted a crappy answer and
only one followup spotted it and said "that's crap", do you bin the
post? Or give someone the oppotunity to ask "why?"

Agressive/abusive/offending language and personal attacks are to be
banned. I'm willing to elaborate on that.

OT posts should not.

Crappy answers should not. Everybody has the right to learn by providing
answers, stupid as they may seem.

The moderator <duh>.

When it is clear, no pass. When in doubt, consult the group. It is well
possible to collect samples now, as a kind of learning database for a
recognition system.

Moderation never works.

The current troll will eventually lose interest.

The answer to offensive speech is more speech, not censorship.

If you value the newsgroup and want to save it from the troll, take
it upon yourself to add content to the newsgroup by answering at
least one question a day. If everyone who reads the newsgroup did
that, the signal-to-noise ratio would always remain in the usable
range.

Of course, you are probably one of Don's sock puppets, anyway, given
the Hotmail address, but I reply fully aware of that.

I don't find the newsgroup littered with garbage, actually, because
I've killfiled all the anonymous remailers and all of Don's hotmail
sock puppets. I never see the garbage.

Anyone can do the same.

If it were serious then it would qualify as "irony of the week" since you
and other anonymous remailers are among the key elements that people are
finding to be disruptive (with the simultaneous arrival of so many of them,
it is a foregone conclusion that they may well be the same person).

But since you know all of this (being one of the offensive elements that you
are) it just qualifies as noise.

Technically next to impossible. Moderated groups on Usenet have to be created as
moderated right from the beginning.
