Can you please tell me what the advantage is of using an access backend with
a VB frontend OVER access as a frontend and backend.

One major advantage is that there is no requirement to have Access installed
on the PC. If you need an application for a number of PC's which have no
requirement for Access apart from this one, and the number of PCs means that
purchasing Access is expensive, you could consider a front end designed with
VB. Creating an Access runtime installation with the Developer's Edition is
another possibility.

There are, however, a number of advantages of using an Access front end.
Because Access is designed specifically for database applications, it does
some things very well and very quickly - designing bound forms / subforms
and complex reports being two examples.

Hello all!!! For a year and a half now, we have been developing different Access 2000 applications. Most of them are access frontend and access backends. Some of them have SQL server 2000 as a backend. There is one application, which consists of a frontend and 3 backend mdb's. Different companies (80) are using the application: 1. Companies with just one pc and one user. 2. Companies with a Cytrix environment.

Hi, Simple question: A customer has an application using Access 2000 frontend and SQL Server 2000 backend. Data connection is over ODBC. There are almost 250 concurrent users and is growing. Have they squeezed everything out of Access? Should the move to a VB.Net frontend taken place ages ago? Cheers Mike

I've developed an Access 2002 database which will be deployed with the backend on a server and frontend on the users' PCs. I've now been advised that new employees will be given laptops with Access 2003 installed and that the server software will not be updated. Also some of the users are using Access 2000 and some Access 2002. My question is - will this work? There is a lack of IT support in this department - they've contracted with...

I posted a question a couple of days ago about running different versions of Access for the frontend versus the backend databases. Got some good advice but now I've received this information: "We are currently running AppleShare IP 6.3 and this allows machines running Windows to connect via IP." So the first choice of server is a Mac. The client is willing to buy a Windows machine if necessary but would like to use an existing server...

I have several Access 97 databases which are split into front end and back end running off a server. The front end mde is shared by 2 or 3 - absolute maximum of 6 concurrent users. This scenario has been working flawlessly for about 2 years. I am now at a point where these databases need to be converted to Access 2003. I think I read somewhere on this forum that the newer versions of Access are not as tolerant to multiple users...

I have zero experience with using a SQL database for a backend and Access for a frontend. I have some questions: 1. Does an SQL database have tables? 2. How does Access connect to the data in an SQL database? Linking, importing, or ??? 3. Earlier today there was a thread regarding DAO and ADO. In the thread it was said that ADO is very useful when the backend is a SQL database. Could someone explain that?

Good Morning all, Lost once again which is becoming a common occurance atm. My database has successfully been broken into a frontend and a backend db. A problem has now arisen as it has become apparant that db managers need to add additional field names to a table. I cant find anyway that access will allow you to create additional fields to already existing tables in the backend from the frontend. In a nutshell, is it possible to...

Background: I have recently started to look at converting an access backend into an SQL backend. Question: By default, when using a query in access does the SQL server only send the records requested from the query OR does SQL still send everything and the filtering is done by Access? If the latter, how to I get SQL to do the hard work and not access?

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
