Recommendation for custom dbase app

I have been using a Lotus Approach built application to control database for
stock control, reference, pricing and reports. This has been fine until now
since I was the only one using the database.

The application is hardly custom, a few macro's and custom reports etc but
not robust enough for other users, that is what I need now.

Obviously I will need to build a better application and embark on a learning
curve which I am looking forward to, but my question is what application
should I put my efforts into in order to create a good system?

I don't know any languages except basic from years ago but I am willing to
learn.

I have heard a lot about Visual Foxpro and know it's used a lot in industry,
but there are other applications out there also.

All advice, tips and suggestions welcome.

Thanks in advance

Jackson

Well, you're asking this in an Access forum, so the natural answer is MS
Access. Many here swear by Access 97, although I've had good luck with
Access 2002 (XP) ... 2003 just came out but i have not yet installed it.
Don't know about the learning curve from Approach to Access, but there is a
very large user base in the Access community which means easy to find
support.

Hi,

Depending on what you need to accomplish, you can choose between Access and
VFoxPro.
If you application is not very big, if all user has the same version of
Access already installed (or you own the Developer version, which allow you
to deploy a runtime version of Access) and if there are no more than few
users who use the application at the same time, and the deployment is not an
important part (you don't want to send / sell the application to many users)
you can start the application in Access. Some things can be made much
quicker in Access than in VFoxPro.

On the other hand, if you want a very robust application, which can handle
hundred of thousands of records, which allows many users working the same
time in the application, which can be easily deployed to thousand of users,
which can be integrated easily with advanced 3'rd party ActiveX controls or
COM libraries without References problems encountered quite often with
Access applications, with a very powerful native database support, than
VFoxPro is the way to go.

If you use some frameworks with VFP, the development time can be
dramatically decreased.

If you are interested to see a demo application written in Visual FoxPro 8,
you can download it from my site:

http://amssoft.dyndns.org:8090/Chris/

It is written using a custom framework I developed by enhancing the native
framework shipped with VFP8. It has also a online help, so you can see there
what modules are available, and how to use them.

The whole application was written in less than 15 hrs, so you can see what
can be done in VFP.

The setup kit is about 13 MB, because it contains not only the application,
but VFP8 runtime and several ActiveX controls I used or I might use to
enhance the application. The setup kit is made with InstallShield Express
VFP edition, which allow you a clean uninstall after you see the demo.

If you need any more details or you have more questions, you can contact me
directly.

Bogdan Zamfir

I've been tasked with integrating an older management system based on DBF files with my snappy new ASP application to provide users of the ASP application with real-time data from the management system. I figure with DBF files, I should use either the DBase drivers or the FoxPro drivers to connect to the database. The integration has gone quite smoothly until yesterday. This means that my connection strings work well based on the...

I'm new to this group. In my company in Japan, we have been using dbase for almost 20 years, and we are now switching to foxpro. But we have hundreds of dbase programs that need to be converted to foxpro ones. Could you please give me some advice? And here special tools for this?

I'm importing some .dbf files into Access, but getting "can't recognize format errors" on some of them I realised that the ones that transfer okay are "dBASE III/IV/Clipper" file format, and the ones that won't work are "dBASE VII" file format Also, the dBASE VII files won't even open correctly. Data is badly jumbled and the format is WAY off...so, there's no solution to it I can think of, other than possibly changing dBASE VII to dBASE...

I am trying to figure out how to query some data out of a dbase IV (.dbf) file sitting on a remote server from my MySQL/PHP/Web Server. Both servers are Windows Server 2003 SP2. My MySQL/PHP/Web server is running PHP 4.3.11, MySQL 4.0.24, and IIS. I have set a system DSN on the remote machine for the directory that contains the dbase file. The DSN name is SASIxp, and the actual file I'm trying to connect to is ADST.DBF.

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
