Microsoft Office 2007 - can't display the gallery

Hello,

I don't know if this is the right forum, or if we even have a forum for this, but i'm at a total loss as how to solve this problem...

When using Word 2007, you normally have the ability to insert page numbers and complete title pages that follow the selected theme from your document.

The only problem that I have, is when I click the button to insert a page number, I don't get the default gallery examples that you normally see in Word. All it says is a greyed out button "Save current selection as new template".

I tried using google and people say it's related with the building blocks.dotx and that you should delete it to restore the problem. Only thing is, that it doesn't solve anything. I want to get my default gallery examples back, so i can work again.

I also tried a complete reinstall but nothing seems to work

you have not made it clear, did you actually try deleting the file?

for a lot of MS products when a file is deleted it simply recreates itself so this may clear any issues with corruption.

yes I tried to delete the file in both locations where it resides,
I also tried a repair method, and followed the points given by Microsoft.

I did a clean windows install on my laptop, along with office 2007 and performed a full update, and on the laptop it is working ok now. Gallery is loaded etc.

Now I'm trying to figure out the differences between the desktop and the laptop

I guess this means, that the problem is on the desktop computer, but Word works fine on the laptop and now the OP wants to know, what the differences between the installations are.

I'd suggest to deinstall Word (or if it's part of a complete Office suite, deinstall that) on the desktop, then search for anything it might have left - for example in C:\Programms\Microsoft Office (windows search is really great for that - just search for terms like "office" and "word"). Delete these things and then run a registry cleaner like the Eusing Free Registry Cleaner or the FreeWindowsRegistryCleaner (both free, but I haven't tested either) or Macecraft RegSupreme (30 day free trial, apparently very good software).

Next, reboot your system. Then check again, that no rubbish is left on your computer, then install Word again. Hopefully, it won't even know, it used to be installed on that computer and will install normally, removing this problem.

it also might be worth creating a new user on the laptop and then trying from that account so that you can narrow down to a fault with the user settings or the actual program but as above a complete uninstall should clear it although I would personally prefer to remove the registry / folders myself as some registry cleaners produce more faults than fix them .

unfortunately I cannot advise on the location of the settings in the registry etc for vista as I don't have a pc with it on to check but if you have problems I will try to locate them

sorry I cannot add a lot to this but I don't have vista or office 2007 installed at present to check further.

You mean the desktop, don't you? Everything works fine on the laptop. (As far as I understood the OP)

hehehe,

anyways I tried an uninstall, searched the entire harddisk for leftover files, tried removing some stuff from the registry,

but when I reinstalled the Office Suite, it just magicly remembered all my settings and things, which resulted in the same occuring: no gallery to use.

What exactly did it remember? Just the thing about the gallery or also other settings?

How did you clean the registry? And do you remember, which "leftover files" you deleted?

Nepomuk

PS.: I've renamed this thread, so that it would suit the problem better.

thanks for the rename :)

About the files deleted, it was a folder in the program files (x64) folder, and one from my roaming profile.

The things remembered for example were my complete outlook settings and emails.

Registry keys were mostly pointers to file locations regarding the class objects in the registry.

I'm probably going to reinstall Vista anyways once my external harddrive arrives. Think that will solve it all :)

That's weird. Something must have been left, but without having access to the computer, I have no idea, what (and where) that could be.

I hope so - but still an annoying problem.
