Create a RAMdisk in Windows XP Pro?

8,435 Recognized Expert Expert
Hi all.

Just wondering, how can I set up a RAM drive in Windows XP Pro? I have a particular application which makes very intensive use of an Access database. The CPU usage is negligible, but it's very slow because it thrashes the disk so much.

Obviously there are other avenues that might need to be explored, from using a different type of database (SQL Server, perhaps) to redesigning the database and/or application.

But as a stop-gap measure (and just to see if I can) I'd like to try placing the database on a RAM drive for the duration of the run, and see how it goes. (Besides, there's a gigabyte of RAM, and most of it is sitting there unused when running this thing.)

Any suggestions?

Thanks. Looks like some useful info there. I was rather appalled though, to read that the MS Ramdrive allows a RAM disk of up to 32MB. This is too small to be of much use for anything, these days.

I might have to try a different one (some of which are also to be found through this link - thanks again).
