Need help, my computer is ridicuously slow...

1 New Member
Okay lets see,

I have a Dell Inspiron XPS 800

Intel Pentium 4 3.40ghz
1.0gb of ram
Ati Mobility Radeon 9800
55GB HD, only used 6GB
Running on Windows XP Pro SP2

Applications open slow, react slow, youtube and regular videos are supposed to be running at 30fps, actual framerate 1.50... sad to say. I just reformated and when I first run the computer, for the first 5 minutes everything runs smoothly then hits the dumps...

Any suggestion/help/settings I can tweak/
I want to refrain from reformating so please give me your advice.

Get Process Explorer Here

Then run it and see if it gives any indication of which applications are using up your resources. Once you have identified what is slowing your computer down you will have a better chance of fixing it.

Alternitively
  1. Pick up your computer
  2. Find a tall building that is local to you
  3. Go to the top of that building
  4. Check there are no passers by
  5. Drop your computer over the side
  6. Just before it hits the gound your computer will be going very fast, but it will crash terminally shortly afterwards

Disclaimer: Anyone choosing to follow these instructions does so entirely at their own risk. The author makes no claim that this will improve the running of your computer and in fact suggests that it would probably be quite detrimental not to mention rather dangerous for anyone located at ground level.

After reformatting, what did you do? A clean re-install of OS & all software followed by downloading and installing all upgrades & security patches, activate Microsoft Update, install up to date firewall, virus scanner and anti spyware software?

If not, so if you re-installed from some recent (or not so recent) disk image or back-up disk, you reinstalled all trouble as well: most probably a corrupt registry. So try to find a utility that will clean up your systems registry, like Advanced System Optimizer.

Well, that's what got me out of systrouble.

A buddy of mine just asked me for this information. I recommended
Advanced Windows Care. It's truly awesome (and free). He has reported back that it solved 98% of his problem (he still hasn't run any good spyware removal tool yet).
