Here's the thing: I'm guessing that you tried to format the disk while the OS was running from that disk. In order to reformat a disk it must be a slave in a running system. That means either boot your s/m (whatever that is) from a floppy or CD (the XP install disk may work) by having the media in a drive before the system boots up (you may have to press a key during the boot process, but the boot screen should tell you which key to press). Sometime this is necessary to wipe out a broken or infected system. But often, you may choose to "R"epair the installation when booting from the XP installation disk.

I hope that helps.

some motherboards don't tell u what key to press to boot from another drive, so go into the bios and put your CD/DVD drive a head of the harddrive, insert the XP cd and exit the bios. u should get a prompt asking to press any key to boot from cd, press something or else it'll boot from the harddrive.

**make sure u back up whatever u need cuz once u format its ALL gone.

Perhaps a more simplified version to what my neighbor upstairs is trying to say:

When you turn-on your computer you usually get some sort of screen logo of manufacturer or black screen with some gibberish tech talk :P...
Anyways on this startup-screen it is usually somewhere indicated that you should press a certain key to enter Setup or BIOS. This button is usually Delete or F2.

Once inside Setup / BIOS (might look scary at first glance) look for an option in which you can change the Boot Order. This is basically what your computer will choose first to start/boot from. Here make sure that your CD/DVD drive is on the top. Sometimes in BIOS a cd-drive is referred to as ATAPI CD-ROM. As long as it contains CD you should be OK.

Now you exit BIOS (choose the option in which you have to save before exiting) and put in your Windows CD (I am assuming you have this). If the Windows you have is lower than 2000 or XP you will need bootdisks to actually load up the CD. Once again I am assuming you have either 2000 or XP and so the CD should start automatically and on the screen it will say 'Press any key to continue.....' Just press anything here and it will load up into the Windows Setup program. From here just follow what is told on the screen.

In this Setup program you can also format your windows / hard drive and this is highly recommended if you are reinstalling Windows. Follow the appropriate steps to formatting the hard drive and then continue into installing Windows. This is usually standard procedure to actually format and then install Windows. All of this is done in the Setup program which is loaded from your Windows CD.

I hope you manage to solve the problem! If not help is just a click away :D

Im almost 100% sure when you are turning on the computer a black screens with codes will pop up. You need to type in f8 and it will take you to something that asks you to uninstall or reinstall if this doesnt work you might want to get a new computer. I wish you luck.

F8 will take u here:

u don't want to go there.

to boot from the CD, have a disk in the tray and make sure the boot order is CD/DVD-ROM then harddrive.
