This is used to DEFINE a variable.

For example:

Dim Name as String
 

This Defines the variable "Name" as a string.

Dim b as Byte

Declares a variable named b whose dimension is Byte type .
It means it can store value in the range of 0 to 255 only.

Dim is used to declare a variable which you can use anywhere in a form where it is declare.
And use anywhere in your application if you declare it in a module.

For example

If you want to store some data which is non digits or in Alphabets or is symols then use

Dim Name as String

If you want to store a digit or numerics then use

Dim Serial as Integer

You can find more data types which you can declare using dim in vb6 object browser.

Before delaring any type of variable dim is written must.
