what could cause inability to "Debug..ste p into" code?

24 New Member
Hello,

I am a neophyte with Visual Basic but have been trying to hurry and get up to speed. I used to be able to "step into" code using Debug..step into but for the last couple of days I am unable to. Regardless of where in the code I place my cursor, I hear a microsoft error "thunk" and step into doesn't work. I am using VBA in Access if that matters.

here's one possible clue but it may just be a coincidence:

I tried some example code yesterday, though today I am working with my own code unrelated to it. Is there some kind of security or setting that can cause this? Thank you so much for your time. I feel lost without Debug!

It's me again :-) I have another clue:
Originally I had this line to begin the Function:

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. Public Function ProcessFileImport(ByVal sFile As String, ByVal sTable As String) As String
If I change it to:

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. Public Function ProcessFileImport()
I can Debug..Step Into

Could someone please explain to this newbie why I cannot "step into" when I am not using a function with parameters and can when using an ordinary procedure without variables passed in?

Thanks!!

Hm... that is a weird one, isn't it. I can't think of any reason why the parameters would make a difference to Debug mode.

What happens if you put a breakpoint inside this routine that you can't step into?

Is there a mechanism or an idiom for adding code for debugging so that it can easily be removed in the production code? I am thinking of something similar to the C/C++ preprocessor statements with which you can compile an application with the debug code or without it (the default). Dan

After reading C# documentation the Conditional attribute seemed the way to go, but after inspecting the IL it seems those methods are still there and I imagine the CLR removes them. Using #if DEBUG means the code does not even reach the IL when compiling in release mode. Is there any benefit to using the Conditional Attribute? Am I right in thinking there will small performance overhead using over #if DEBUG.

I've got a web app that has the debug parameter in the web.config file set to true. Everything works great. However, I want to set debug to false before putting the app into production. When I do so, I get an error that states; "Object reference not set to an instance of an object". It also does not have any more information and tells me to set debug to true to see more info. But of course, when I set debug to true, the app works fine! ...

Does anyone know why I have no "Step Into" option during debugging in VS 2005/C# app? I have "Step Over" but no "Step Into" even though it would be stepping into one of my own functions inside the same .cs file.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
