tv tuner "api" in vb.net

I've done a little searching using google, but I'm still confused... hoped
somebody can assist....

What I want to do is to have the option of having a window within my
application display a television channel - either a terrestrial channel
(using an aerial) or a satellite channel (I'm in the UK so I'm talking "SKY"
here).

I know that there are various suppliers of tv tuner/capture cards. Is
there a standard API to handle these?? ie can I write my software without
reference to a particular card? Can I control the channel that is
displayed from within my software?? Can this be done with satellite as
well as terrestrial tv?

Should I be looking at hosting a product like mediaplayer in my application
to do this????

I've read about a Microsoft API called DirectShow - is this relevant to this
?

Basically, I know what I want to do, but have no idea which direction to
take to achieve it...

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Regards
Simon
