Hi Brian,
Very interesting question, and if you get an answer, please pass it along to
me.
I assume you are loading a report document object into the viewer. The
report document object has a wealth of objects in its object model, among
which are load(), isloaded(). I don't know if looking further into either
of these would help.
I recommend you get in touch with Brian Bischof, who wrote 'crystal reports
..net programming' (available on amazon), the best book on using the crystal
object model that I know of. The book itself, which I have, does not go
into this, so far as I remember, but if anyone can figure it out, Brian can.

Is there any way to get the status of a report being generated by the
crystal reports viewer control? I have a report that takes up to 10
minutes to run and it looks like it's just jamed while this happens... I'd like to
build a status window to show the progress as a percentage or something,
but of would you get this information out of crystal? I remember an older
version could do this, can the new one? if so how? thanks
