How do i get device specific names for comm ports

1 New Member
Hello all
i am using vb.net 2005 and using the comm ports succesfully. as it is now i add all of the comm ports to a list box so that i can select a device in which to communicate. however some of those devices can lock-up the system as they are now the correct device.

If i look in the system properties/device manager of windows i can see that each device has a name such as XYZComm Controller,DTRA ,so on and so forth. They are all forms of comm ports but have different hardware.

What i would like to do is only add the ports that have DTRA so that they are the only ports available to the program. Normall i would do this by opening each port then querying the device with a specific command and looking at the result but some device simply lock up or the program will crash.

How can i do this???

Thanks in advance

Hello: Is there a way to see at the python prompt the names of all the public methods of a class or the names exported by a module? I know that GUI-based IDEs have a nifty way of displaying these in the form of a drop-down list, but I'm looking for some function or method that will simply return a list of strings. Thanks,

Where do I find information on how to address and pass data to and from the serial ports and USB ports in VB. VB6 supports the serial ports easily but I see no reference to using the USB ports. VB.net literature does not provide any coverage on either the serial ports or the USB ports.

Hi All and seasons greetings. Is there an easy way of getting a list of current Comm ports on a machine? I suspect that most machines these days have 1 and 2, but there could be others and I would like to get a list of them to offer the end user. Many thanks, Steve.

Hello, I would like to get some opinions on using the Comm Port with Access 2000. We have a few jobs coming in that require us to interface with a PLC via the Comm Port. My partner feels we should use a Visual Basic Front End and the VB component as opposed to Access. Has anyone had good luck interfacing to a Comm Port using Access?

I am writing a program and need to identify the friendly names of ports. I have queried the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHIN\\EHARDWARE\\DEVICEMAP\\SERIALCOMM, but all that tells me is which ones actually exist. Is there a way to get the names of the devices, such as those shown in the Device Manager under "Ports"? Thanks,

Hi I am developing a mobile web VB asp.net application in VS 2005. The forms are mobile web forms. I have a mobile web configuration page (web.config). In one of my forms I have a DeviceSpecific control so that I can choose to use an asp:TextBox when PocketIE is detected, otherwise I want to use a mobile:TextView control. Here is a snippet of my asp code:

I'm trying to send some printer commands (ZPLII) to an attached USB printer using the SerialPort component. I didn't get very far at all. In fact I haven't gotten anywhere. The first problem I encountered is that a call to SerialPort.GetPortNames() returns an empty string. In other words, NO port names are returned. I'm not terribly knowledgable about ports but from the Hardware Manager I did notice that I don't have the Ports and...

I'm running a small program that should list all of the comm ports that are available on the computer. The only problem is that nothing is recognized. I've stepped through the program and it jumps over the while .....hasMoreItems. When I set the hasMoreItems to false it executes it. There are no syntax errors and it runs completely, it just doesn't give me the info I need. Thanks in advance! package gps; import javax.comm.*;...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
