handling connection open error

I'm still a bit new to vb.net using visual studio 2005, so bare with me if
this question isn't well worded.

On a rare occasion, my application will throw an error that I haven't yet
tracked down but I'm getting close.

It is occurring during an open Odbc connection to a mysql database.

Afterward, the Odbc connection seems to be locked open if a user goes back
in to the application and I'm not aware of how to close it properly.

I assume that I should place code into the global.asax file under the app
error sub that would close all open connections on throwing an error, but
I've been unable to figure out exactly how.

Could someone point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Jeff

I understand that with IIS5.1 on Windows XP Professional SP1, I can 1) Either set under IIS Manager-> Any specific Virtual Directory-> Configuration->Options->ASP Script timeout for all pages within that directory OR 2) Within a specific page, set the timeout as per http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/en/server/iis/default.asp?url=/windows2000/en/server/iis/htm/asp/vbob246s.htm e.g. <% Server.ScriptTimeout = 1 %> and that the value in...

Hello, I am looking for guidance on best practices to incorporate effective and complete error handling in an application written in VB.NET. If I have the following function in a class module (note that this class module represents the business layer of code NOT the gui layer): Public Function Test(ByVal Parm1 As Integer, ByVal Parm2 As Integer) As SqlDataReader ' Declare the SQL data layer class Dim oSQL As New...

I am considering general error handling routines and have written a sample function to look up an ID in a table. The function returns True if it can find the ID and create a recordset based on that ID, otherwise it returns false. **I am not looking for comments on the usefulness of this function - it is only to demonstrate error handling** There are three versions of this code. David Fenton says under the earlier thread "DAO...

Hi guys, Basically i have been developing in dotnet for a couple of years but ive had a few issues in regards to error handling. For example - I have a class that i call passing in a stored procedure and connection string as a path. My method returns a dataset. In my SP i have an output parameter which tells me whether the SP select is successful or not. If i get a error code passed back then i throw an exception this then returns...

How should sockets, filestreams, and anything else that needs to be closed be handled using try/catch/finally blocks? The only solution I can see is to make the objects public or use a public flag that the error handler can set so that the rest of the cold can clean up after the error handler has run (in my case when a hard close is performed my socket loses connection and throws an error- I need to close it after the error so it can...

Hello I'm a bit confused on how one should handle exceptions. I'm currently building an ADO.NET Windows Forms application. I've built a class for manipulating data within the database in question. This class is used from forms. Let's assume that there is an SQL error: this will throw an exception. Where should I handle it? How should I handle it? What to show when giving an error message? Is there any "centralized" way of handling...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
