drag drop objects from .net application to e.g. windows explorer

the user of my app should be able to drag an object (e.g. a file) out
of my app into another folder or another app.

everywhere i found information how to drag n drop objects(files) from
one control to another control in the same application but nowhere i
found a hint how to drag objects (files) out of an app and drop them
into another one.

is someone out there who know how to do that? thanks for your help.

Hi, if I drag an Outlook.MailItem to a Windows-Explorer window a <subject>.msg file will be created. Now I try to drag & drop a mail item to my own WinForm app. Unfortunately it doesn't work. In the "drop event" are eight DataFormats (e.Data.GetFormats()) but the important one (imho) "FileContents" is "Nothing"/"null".

I am trying to implement the user feedback provided by Windows Explorer when draggng a filename from one place to another. I have the drag and drop action worked out but have had no luck in finding how to capture the piece of the screen into a bitmap to simulate the movement. I know this could be done with the Windows API but can't find any way to do it with .Net functions. Any help is appreciated.

I need to add the ability to drag from a Windows Form and drop into a non dotNet application. For example, having a generated image in my app that I wish to drag out into explorer as a friendly way to save it. I have tried creating the object that I place into the DoDragDrop() by inheriting the COM interfaces IDropSource and IDataObject with no luck. If anyone can help I am very much open to suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Apologies for the ambiguous title, you will be expecting me to be asking how to perform drag and drop from my application into another application. Well, kind-of. I've got drag and drop sorted, apart from one thing. I'm dragging and dropping items from my treeview and listview which represent database "Images" (blobs). Now, I don't store the blob in the tree, I fetch it when I need it. This is a problem for drag and drop, because, for...

I've implemented an IDataObject interface around one of my classes in order to facilitate drag/drop from my application into explorer. What I want to do is allow the user to select a series of data objects in my application and to drag/drop them onto explorer for explorer to create files of them. Is this possible, or will I just have to stick with an explicit "Export" method in my program?

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
