Thread locking using a shared class member

Consider the following simple class:

Public MyClass

Private t As Thread
Shared LockObj As Object = New Object()

Public Sub New()
t = New Thread(AddressO f DoWork)
t.Start
End Sub

Private Sub DoWork()
SyncLock MyClass.LockObj
'Code to run in thread here
End SyncLock
End Sub

End Class

The code in DoWork will be run on the thread. Suppose that in that
method, I wish to write some data to a log file. Suppose, also, that
there will be several of these running and they each need to write to
the same file. Is it okay to use a Shared member as I have here for
synchronizing the thread? Is there a more preferred way?

Thanks

Thread Locking In Static Methods I have the need for a Log Manger class that has static methods. Normally I would use the lock statement or a Monitor statement both of which take a reference to (this). In the case of these static methods I am not able to do that.

OleDbCommand class like many .NET classes has the following description in its help file: "Thread Safety Any public static (Shared in Visual Basic) members of this type are safe for multithreaded operations. Any instance members are not guaranteed to be thread safe." I have 2 questions: 1. I thought dynamic variables are thread-safe since threads have their own

My first thought was to call WorkerThread.Suspend but the help cautions against this (for good reason) because the caller has no control over where the thread actually stops, and it might have a lock pending, for example. I want to be able to stop a thread temporarily, and then optionally resume it or stop it for good.

I was looking at the docs for Thread and can't understand the different between "unnamed data slot "and "data slot".and docs in Thread.GetData() say "Threads use a local store memory mechanism to store thread-specific data." what is "thread-specific data"? Best regards wmt email:iam1708@hotmail.com

Heya Group. I am hoping that someone can help me understand how to use Synclock properly. I am a tad confused. I have a class that is instanced on multple threadpool threads, and uses shared members to track the state shared by all instances. The web is littered with examples of people using ... Hello, i'm trying to program a thread that would be locked (by a mutex) and that would only be unlocked once that a function (generating data) is done. The purpose is to generate data, and unlock the mutex in order to activate the thread once the data is generated. I have to do it this way, i can only call the thread if the data are generated. ******************************************************** step 1: initialize the mutex

Hello. First post, but been doing a bit of reading here. I am working on a project in Java, but decided to switch over to C# after seeing some of the additional features I can get from C#. One of the big changes I want to make is event-driven code (rather than the linear flow I had in Java). I have spent a week or so searching Google, talking to a couple of programming friends, and just chewing on it in my brain. I think I have an ok handle...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
