Creating an Optional Date Parameter

What should the default value for an optional Date parameter be in a
function if I want it to default to Nothing?

Setting the optional value to "" fails, so does setting it to Nothing.

Function blah(byval User as string, Optional byval UserDate as Date = ?????)

Thanks (again)

Use DateTime.MinVal ue, and then check to make sure the passed value is
greater than that inside the function body.

Below is a routine I use for creating log files. It works great on most VB Applications. However, for web services, it needs some help. The problem is I cant reflect properly into a web service to find out where the .DLL is. As is, this code writes a log file ok, but the log file ends up buried directory deep inside the .Net Framework directories. Anyone know how to find the path of a web service .DLL so I can fix this code to write to...

I am migrating my first vb6 app to vb.net 2003. In the vb6 app a number of subs had optional date parameters: Sub Fred ( ... ,optional FromDate as Date = 0...) I need something like zero in there to see if the parameter has been used or not. In vb.net the imported code fails with: Value of type 'Integer' cannot be converted to 'Date'

I got a similar idea a couple of months ago, but now this one will require no change to the clr, is relatively easy to implement and would be a great addition to C# 3.0 :) so here we go.. To make things simpler and better readable I'd make all default parameters named parameters so that you can decide for yourself which one to pass and which not, rather than relying on massively overlaoded methods which hopefully provide the best...

In our applications, we use the special value of DateTime.MinValue to represent "null dates" throughout all our code. We recently ran into an issue where we wanted an optional date parameter for a procedure. We weren't able to declare it with DateTime.MinValue as its default value, as MinValue is a read-only property rather than a constant. To work around, we had to use a "magic date" that we checked for later on. I was never very happy...

Hi guys, In the past I have used several time optional parameters in my function. But Now I am more inclined to think that they are more dangerous than useful, and probably better to be avoided. I'd like to hear your various opinions on this matter.

I have created a custom control for ASP.NET using VB.NET. My control inherits from the System.Web.UI.WebControls.CompositeControl class, and is working fine. However, the Visual Studio .NET designer shows the following error on the control in the designer: Error Creating Control - No parameterless constructor defined for this object I have defined four New methods. Although none of them are simply Public Sub New(), one of them has just one...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
