help with identifying a border router

How can I tell the host's border router with traceroute? I've always thought that it's the one at the second hop, but I've been told that's this is not always the case. Thanks in advance.

There really is no definitive way to do this, it usually requires some existing knowledge of the host. One can try to glean this information from IP addresses and host names, as well as geographic location.

When you use the term host, what are you referring to? The ISP? Your machine? A server out in internetland?

hehe..."internetland," I like that. Well, I ran traceroute using a machine at a University, and so I want to know the border router of the University. When you say check the IPs, can you go into more detail on that? Thanx.
