Web FE & SQL BE

How popular is this current set up? Web FE & SQL BE?
Is it possible for a person to build a web site using (publisher, front page,
etc) and once they have built there web pages/site with (publisher, front
page, etc) they can connect this to SQL Server 2000 so the Web FE becomes a
database connection to SQL BE tables?
Does a person have to build the web pages from scratch from the different
programming languages to be able to connect this to a SQL BE or can a person
simply create a web site that will need a database (just a question no
specific db) and use the property settings some where in the enterprise
manager of SQL 2000 to properly connect the web to BE SQL?
