SQL Server Hardware Setup

I have a SQL Server 2000 database that I will need to take from
development and put into production. Currently the database is on a
workstation running Windows 2K Server for development purposes. The
database will have dozens of users with data entry capability and
hundreds of users with viewing/querying capability. The users will
have a web front end to the database. I need to know the best possible
hardware setup I will need to purchase to support this user scenario.
Money is no object but the cost must still be within reason. Can
anybody give me any recommendations or point me to some websites that
have hardware specs for SQL Server?

There are a couple of chapters in SQL Server 2000 Performance Tuning
Technical Reference book that I have found very useful in sizing an
application.

You need to analyse the transactions within your application and then
you can calculte cpu, memory and I/O depending on projected number of
users, amount of data, required response time etc. I found it very
useful, quite a lot of work to do it properly though.

Hope this helps

Regards

John

Hello! This is my second post. Ppl really helped me with the first. I hope there are answers for this one as well I own a game company (www.aepoxgames.net) releasing the beta for our first sci-fi space game in about 2 weeks (www.andromedaonline.net) We have multiple servers, but the game engine (Game Server Program) is a Java program (don't ask why) on a windows 2003 enterprise system with dual

I 'inherited' a group of SQL Server server class machines. They are true server technology but the disk sub-systems are lacking. There is one hot-swap backplane that all the drives share (with one SCSI channel) thusly even though there are three logical drives (composed from 6 to 8 hard drives), they all go through one channel. This is creating a performance issue that is noticable and can be seen in various performance counters that...

Hi, Still in the design process of a Windows 2003 web server with a SQL backend. Expecting to have about 2000 visitors a day accessing lists and search queries on a 200-300 MB db. This server will be collocated in a datacenter. I have a few scenarios that I would appreciate in getting some comments/criticism on: Scenario 1: Box 1, SBS 2003 Premium (with SQL 2000), 2GB RAM, Raid 5 HD

This is about a mysterious slow down only. An application (split data & FE) that has run for 6 years without error with six to ten users. The hardware (not my job) has been ‘updated' and a new fast server added. The data has been moved to the server and the program exists on each separate user's pc. The original program version in Ac97 for data and program was then updated into Ac2000 as it appeared to use less resources but it is just...

Like a lot of database developers, I often choose Jet for the back- end. I'm starting to worry about what will happen when Jet is deprecated. Ostensibly, Jet users like me must switch to SQL Server (or MSDE / SQL Express), but there's something I just don't understand. Without Jet, how will we create file server database applications? In other words, how will we create multi-user apps which use a file server to share data and don't...

(apologies for the cross-post) Hi, I am new to my company and have been asked to recommend a new redundancy / backup plan for our online server. I've talked to the other folks in the company and they have been describing an usual feature of the server wherein if we try to install ANY new hardware like a new harddisk, the system automatically formats everything. (apparently this "resetting feature" kicks in even if we add more RAM

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
