Possible to run MSDE (2000) and 2005 Express at the same time

Just wondering if this is possible, I'm coding this application that will run on a network with a SQL Server 2000, however each workstation (notebook computers in this case) will need to copy some of that data locally to a SQL 2005 Express instance. On the computer I'm developing on I'd like to have an instance of both MSDE and SQL 2005 Express running so I can replicate the network as close to possible while writing code.

Alternatively I could just install MSDE (2000) on to the workstations, however 2k5 Express can be embedded into setup files with visual studio so that is really appealing to me.

Any help or links would be appreciated.

I have tried to install MSDE 2000, first the normal version, then the one for developers using Visual Studio .NET. Each time the installation appears to complete, but there is no shortcut to start the program and it's not in the Start/Programs menu. However, if I look for it in "Add and Remove Programs" it's there. The directory C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Binn includes some exe files and I have tried to start them,...

Since an ASP.NET/ADO.NET website is run on the server by a single "asp_net worker process", therefore doesn't that mean that even 50 simultaneous human users of the website would appear to the database backend as a single user. Therefore, wouldn't switching our Access (actually Jet 4.0 OLEDB) database backend on our ASP.NET/ADO.NET website to an MSDE backend be an advantageous change to make while NOT limiting the number of simultaneous web...

Posting this here as MS has informed me that microsoft.public.dotnet.languages.vb.data is not a supported group, but this one is. (seems odd since it's on their server and is a sub of this group, but I do need an answer) My application deploys with MSDE (2000). Currently it's strictly single user, but I'm working on a multi-user version now. In order for one machine to connect to the other, I must run the svrnetcn.exe utility and...

I posted this in one of the VB forums but I'm starting to think it might be more appropriate to have it here, since it really seems to be a SQL server (MSDE/Express 2005) problem: Hey, all, I have a problem with queries against a SQL server instance that I just found and is causing me fits. I hope someone can point me in the right direction, please. TIA. Basically, I got a Vista OS machine to test my VB6 app on it as some

Hello, all, I started out thinking my problems were elsewhere but as I have worked through this I have isolated my problem, currently, as a difference between MSDE and SQL Express 2005 (I'll just call it Express for simplicity). I have, to try to simplify things, put the exact same DB on two systems, one running MSDE and one running Express. Both have 2 Ghz processors (one Intel, one AMD), both have a decent amount of RAM (Intel system...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
