Hi,
The more I read, the more confused I'm getting ! (no wonder they say
ignorance is bliss)
I just got back from the bookstore and was flipping through some SQL Server
Administration books.
One says, that to get the best query performance, youi do two things:

Hi all
I recently noticed when trying to optimise a major query of a chess website
I am the webmaster of, that adding an order by for "gamenumber" which is a
clustered index field as in for example "order by timeleft desc, gamenumber
desc" actually speeded up the queries and reduced sql server 2000 timeouts.
I have an ASP error log and I am...

I ran into a table that is used a lot. Well less than
100,000 records. Maybe not a lot of records but i believe
this table is used often. The table has 26 fields, 9 indexes
but no Primary Key at all!
There are no table relationships defined in this database, no
Natural keys, only Surrogate keys in the database.
1- Maybe an odd question...

One table I manage has a clustered index, and it includes some
varchar columns. When it is initially created, all the columns
in the clustered index are populated, and then some of the longer
varchars are populated through update queries. If the varchar
columns are stored outside the clustered structure, then it would
make sense to create...

I just inherited a Java application with a fairly complex data model
that does not yet have any indexes except those on primary keys. It is
still in development and before I get to do any performance testing I
want to put some default indexes on it. I realize that this a very
vague request but it's better than nothing so I want to start with...

Let's say I suddenly discover that an unclustered table would benefit
if it was clustered on column(s) already indexed. Currently, I'd need
to drop that perfectly good index just to re-create it as a clustered
index. Is that really necessary? It seems like DB2 should be able to
update the catalog to note the change and let me run an inplace...

I've been doing a bit of reading and have read in quite a few places
that an identity column is a good clustered index and that all or at
least most tables should have a clustered index. The tool I used to
generate tables made them all with non clustered indexes so I would
like to drop all of them and generate clustered indexes. So my...

Hi,
I have a table in SQL Server 2000 with clustered index set on the Primary key. The primary key is a set of 5 fields(attributes).
Now I want to add 1 more field into this clustered index as most of my queries are retrieving the data of this filed.
When I tried to add this field into the index, SQL Server 2000 allows only to create a non...

Erland,
I'm sure you mean that to be with love and care, rather than just "slap on"
any clustered index for the sake of it. :) A poorly chosen clustered index
could be worse than none at all.

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it. ...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then...
