Re: Static memory allocation in Python

On Jun 17, 2008, at 2:34 PM, Eduardo Henrique Tessarioli wrote:
Hi,

I am running a very simple python application and I noted that the
memory allocation is something like 4,5M.
This is a problem in my case, because I have to run 2 thousand
process at the same time.
The memory I need is 100k or less. Is there any way to set this for
the python process?
The runtime itself isn't as light as, say, the C stdlib.

Now, there are a lot of shared libraries here, so you should measure
not just a single instance, but how much it actually grows in overall
system memory usage as you run more simultaneous python interpreters.

Eduardo

Is it possible to determine how much memory is allocated by an arbitrary Python object? There doesn't seem to be anything in the docs about this, but considering that Python manages memory allocation, why would such a module be more difficult to design than say, the GC?

When do static members allocate memory? (at load time) How about static variables within a method? Where is the memory for static variables - is it allocated on the heap or does it have a region of its own?

In C programming, I want to know in what situations we should use static memory allocation instead of dynamic memory allocation. My understanding is that static memory allocation like using array is faster than malloc, but dynamic memory allocation is more flexible. Please comment... thanks.

I have a class that throws exceptions in new initializer, and a static array of objects of this type. When something is wrong in initialization, CGI program crashes miserably. Debugging shows uncaught exception. How to catch an exception that happened before main() try { ... } catch (...) { ... } block? Is there a way?
