Locking tables with SQLAlchemy

6 New Member
Hi,
I need to lock a table for WRITE.
The scenario is that I have a SELECT followed by an INSERT, where the INSERT depends on the outcome of the SELECT. I have to make sure that no other process is modifying the table after my SELECT but before my INSERT.

1) How do i do it via SQLAlchemy ?
2) Is there any other method (not via locks) to achieve my goal?

TIA

SQLAlchemy looks like a very interesting and well put-together package.
I curious about what the actual database that you are using is. Am I correct in assuming that SQLAlchemy will connect to an installed database?

I am using MySQL.
I did not understand the 2nd question.
That answers my question and helps a lot. I'm going to check out this SA thing and see if will be appropriate for my projects. Then, perhaps, we'll be able to help each other.

It looks like a very useful tool.

Hi All, I want to lock 2 tables on 2 servers using TABLOCKX hint. These tables function as semaphores in my application. It means when the tables are locked then other users will not be able to access them and automatically they can not continue their works. I have tried using the following code, but it does not work. I always got the error :

Hi, Is it possible to retrieve details about the database, specifically a list of the tables in the database; and then to retrieve the columns and their types for the tables? Is this dependant on the database? Thanks Chris

Are there any major differences between these two? It seems they can both be used with TurboGears, and SQLAlchemy with Django. I'm just wondering what everyone's preference is, and why, and if there are even more choices for ORM. Thanks.

I've installed SQLAlchemy under Windows (strangely, it didn't install inside ../site-packages/ as a directory, but rather as a SQLAlchemy-0.2.8-py2.4.egg file). I can import it with 'import sqlalchemy' and run my program with WingIDE, SPE and ofcourse in plain old Python shell (ipython actually). But when I build my .exe using py2exe and run the executable, it fails with 'Cannot import module sqlalchemy' error. Is it because SA is...

I have a class with a lot of attributes whose objects are accessed from multiple threads. I would like to synchronize the access to all the attributes, i.e. acquire a lock, return the value, release the lock (in a finally clause). Is there a way to do that without turning each attribute into a property and manually wrapping each property with the locking code? How about classes bound with SQLAlchemy? Is it possible to do that for...

I'm using SQLAlchemy and have a need to call an Oracle function; which is not the same as a stored procedure. Can this be done directory or indirectly with SQLAlchemy? If so, can someone please provide an example? If not, how do I obtain the raw cx_Oracle cursor so I can use callfunc directly on that? Thanks, Greg

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
