using the sysloghandler class

Hello all,

I have a small script which attempts to write to the user.log syslog

import logging, logging.handler s

logger = logging.getLogg er('bender')
handler = logging.handler s.SysLogHandler (('localhost',
logging.handler s.SYSLOG_UDP_PO RT),
logging.handler s.SysLogHandler .LOG_USER)
formatter = logging.Formatt er('%(filename) s: %(levelname)s: %(message)s')
handler.setForm atter(formatter )
logger.addHandl er(handler)
logger.error('w hat')

but no log entries show up, however if I use the syslog module as such:
>>import syslog
syslog.syslog ('testing syslog')
everything works fine. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Any help
would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Nick

The logging package's syslog handler attempts to use UDP to
communicate with the syslog daemon; are you sure your system is set up
with the daemon listening on SYSLOG_UDP_PORT ? If it's not, then this
could explain what you are seeing.

Anyway... At Europython Guido discussed with everyone the outstanding issue with decorators and there was a clear majority in favour of having them, which was good. From where I was sitting it looked like about 20:20 split on the following syntaxes: 1 def func(arg1, arg2, arg3) : function... 2 def func(arg1, arg2, arg3): function...

Hi, Perhaps this is as much a Unix question as a Python question. I really like the Python logging module, and I've used it extensively, with good results. Now I have a requirement to add a SysLogHandler, and it's just not working. It looks like the socket is connecting, but nothing comes out on the log. (Fedora Core 2 /var/log/messages) The simplest of many configurations I have tried is included below.

Hello all, I'm posting this to the list with the intention to form a group of people interested in this type of solution. I'm not going to spam the list with it, unless for occasional and relevant announcements. If you're interested, drop me a note. But if for some reason you think that this discussion is fine here at the c.l.py, please let me know. ** LONG POST AHEAD **

Hi, I am automating Access reports to PDF using PDF Writer 6.0. I've created a DTS package to run the reports and schedule a job to run this DTS package. If I PC Anywhere into the server on where the job is running, the job runs sucessfully, PDF files got generated, everything is good. If I scheduled the job to run at the time that I am not logged into the server, Access is not able to print to the printer. The error is pretty...

For anyone who is just getting into VB.NET and/or is starting to work with inheritance I would like to point out a potential pitfall. We found this confusion recently when code-reviewing an application. If you have not used the keyword 'Overridable' then read on for sure... If you setup a child class and you want to override a method in your base class, you may see the squiggles under your child's method name. The pop-up/build error says...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
