I'm realizing I didn't frame my question well.
What's ***TOTALLY COMPELLING*** about Ruby over Python? What makes you jump
up in your chair and scream "Wow! Ruby has *that*? That is SO FRICKIN'
COOL!!! ***MAN*** that would save me a buttload of work and make my life
sooooo much easier!"
As opposed to minor differences of this feature here, that feature there.
Variations on style are of no interest to me. I'm coming at this from a...

I think everyone who used Python will agree that its syntax is
the best thing going for it. It is very readable and easy
for everyone to learn. But, Python does not a have very good
macro capabilities, unfortunately. I'd like to know if it may
be possible to add a powerful macro system to Python, while
keeping its amazing syntax, and if it could be possible to
add Pythonistic syntax to Lisp or Scheme, while keeping all
of the...

I did it.
I proposed python as the main language for our next CAD/CAM
software because I think that it has all the potential needed
for it. I'm not sure yet if the decision will get through, but
something I'll need in this case is some experience-based set
of rules about how to use python in this context.
For example... is defining readonly attributes in classes
worth the hassle ? Does duck-typing scale well in complex

Hi everyone,
I need to write a web app, that will support millions of user accounts,
template-based user pages and files upload. The client is going to be
written in Flash. I wondered if I coudl get your opinions - what do you
think is the best language to use for the server? Python or Java? And
I'm talking scalability, object oriented, development tools etc.
Thansk for any idea! I'd love to hear it
Happy New 2006,

You will often hear that for reasons of fault minimization, you should
use a programming language with strict typing:
http://turing.une.edu.au/~comp284/Lectures/Lecture_18/lecture/node1.html
I just came across a funny example in which the opposite is the case.
The following is a binary search algorithm in Java. It searches a value
in an ordered array a of ints:
public static int binarySearch(int a, int key) {

Hi, I'm learning STL and I wrote some simple code to compare the
efficiency of python and STL.
//C++
#include <iostream>
#include <string>
#include <vector>
#include <set>
#include <algorithm>
using namespace std;

DiveIntoPython.org was the first book I read on python, and I really
got a lot out of it. I need to start learning Java (to maintain a
project I've inherited), and was wondering if anyone knew of any
similar books for Java?
Maybe once I know my way around the language, I can sneak Jython in...
:-)
Thanks!

I'm pretty new to python, but am very happy with it. As well as using
it at work I've been using it to solve various puzzles on the Project
Euler site - http://projecteuler.net. So far it has not let me down,
but it has proved surprisingly slow on one puzzle.
The puzzle is: p is the perimeter of a right angle triangle with
integral length sides, {a,b,c}. which value of p < 1000, is the
number of solutions {a,b,c} maximised?
Here's my...

want learn the guts of it instead of just booting up some wordwank or
whatever. I started to learn python, but heard php was...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
Adolph will...
