At the suggestion of one of my correspondents, I slightly reluctantly
implemented an RSS feed for my website/writing. It is perhaps a bit
crude so far, but maybe I'll spiff it up. The RSS also has an HTML
front to it.
If you want to see the latest news about my _Charming Python_ or _XML
Matters_ columns, or about other articles (later, perhaps stuff about
my book), take a look at:

If I understand correctly, I have no assurance that I can determine the type
of a simple class instance thrown as an exception unless I explicitly catch
it by name. (non-derived classes having no virtual funcitons have no rtti)
That is, there is no way to do something like:
try{
funct_from_3rd_party();
}
catch(...){
std:err << extract_name() << std::endl;
}

Hi,
I have many assert() call in my code, now I am considering to replace
them with exception. The reason I want to do this change is that with
the program going bigger and bigger, it is hard to test all the corner
cases, and thus assert() does not work as good as before. The problem
is if there are something really bad which was not captured by
assert(), then in runtime, most likely the program will crash. This is
the worst user...

Greetings!
I am working on an application that targets a Pocket PC running Windows CE
and SQL Server CE. Almost all functions in the application use a Try block
with a Catch block that looks like this:
Try
TryToDoIt()
Catch e as Exception
LogTheError(e)

I'm using the code below, but an error is not getting trapped.
Where can such errors occur?
In another process?
Try
SomeCode
Catch ex As Exception
Dim strMsg() As String = Split(ex.ToString, vbCrLf)
With lstStuff
For i = 0 To UBound(strMsg)

I'm having troubles with uploading files to the ftp server using
FtpWebRequest. I occasionally get an Exception saying: "The underlying
connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive". but
what's wired i get this exception just after upload is finished when i
try to close the stream that was used for upload. this happens only when
upload takes more that certain amount of time. note that upload itself
goes smooth no matter...

When language changes make old code uncompilable, that's not what is
called protection of investment.
New compilers (g++ 3.2.3) reject classes where methods throw the
class they belong to.
gcc 2.95.3 allowed it.
What are the minimal modification, that leave the usage of the class
sound and can be compiled by newer compilers.

Hello Guys and Galls,
To start off, I have reached the solution I was looking for, but I would like comments and feedback on the solution I have reached and tips/tricks on making it more elegant. I am not satisfied with the underlying machinery of the solution though.
I am an advanced C programmer and most do object-based programming in C++. Please do not reply to this article with references to basic material or obvious tips.

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

The next Access Europe User Group meeting will be on Wednesday 1 May 2024 starting at 18:00 UK time (6PM UTC+1) and finishing by 19:30 (7.30PM).
In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
Adolph will...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
