In a comment off a post on lambda-the-ultimate, I noticed this little
offhand remark:

If this is considered generally true (at least in the
straight-from-the-rumor-mill sense) I'm hoping someone here can either
provide the backstory on this or point me in the direction of related
discussions on python-dev (it's **real** hard to do a search on that
list's archives when one's main keywords are lambda, map, filter,
etc...).
I'm quite fond of lambda, and it seems to have plenty of uses aside
from munging lists in connection with map calls (i.e. passing one-off
comparators to cmp()). Of course, my first "real" programming language
was lisp, so perhaps I'm biased. (You should see all the anonymous
classes I throw off in Java!)
Anyway -- back to your regularly scheduled decorator-discussion of the
day. ;-)

The real reason is political neutrality. lambda & al revealed to provide just
too much access to Guido's famed time machine, when python 1.5.2 itself
manifested blind patriotism after 9/11, eg filter(lambda W : W not in 'ILLITERATE','B ULLSHIT')

Hi,
I'm trying to write a Python function that parses
an expression and builds a function tree from it
(recursively).
During parsing, lambda functions for the the terms
and sub-expressions are constructed on the fly.
Now my problem is lazy evaluation. Or at least I

I'm a little worried about the expected disappearance of lambda in
python3000. I've had my brain badly broken by functional programming
in the past, and I would hate to see things suddenly become harder
than they need to be.
An example of what I mean is a quick script I wrote for doing certain
actions based on a regexp, which I will simlify in this instance to
make the pertanant points more relevent.

I've read with interest the continuing debate about 'lambda' and its place

Just to say that personally I think its an elegant and useful construct for
many types of programming task (particularly number theory/artificial
intelligence/genetic algorithms)
I can't think why anyone would be proposing to do away with it. Sometimes

I want my code to be Python 3000 compliant, and hear
that lambda is being eliminated. The problem is that I
want to partially bind an existing function with a value
"foo" that isn't known until run-time:
someobject.newfunc = lambda x: f(foo, x)
The reason a nested function doesn't work for this is
that it is, well, dynamic. I don't know how many times
or with what foo's this will be done.

I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
