Hi all!
Me and a couple of IRC-addicts have decided to hold regular Python-Workshops
on IRC, especially oriented towards beginners and intermediate programmers,
who have not used Python before, or are just beginning to pick up Python.
These workshops will be held in #python.de on irc.freenode.ne t, and as the
channel name suggests, will be held in german.
Why I'm posting here is simply the fact that I thought that some people might
be interested, regardless of the language, and regardless of the workshops to
get to know that there is a german Python channel on IRC, which is currently
frequented by about 10-15 people, some of them complete beginners, others
quite advanced. This channel is advertised on python.org, but in such a far
away corner, that I'd have never found it, had I not seen it on the channel
list of freenode.
If you're interested, anyhow, come by and join us in discussing about Python,
and anything else that might arise.
The next workshop will be:
Date: 16th of June, 2004 (this week Wednesday)
Time: 8pm CEST (20:00 german time)
Topic: Python und Objekt-Orientierte Programmierung für Einsteiger

Well, after years of teaching grade 12 students c++, I've decided to
make a switch to Python.
Why?
* interactive mode for learning
* less fussing with edit - compile - link - run - debug - edit -
compile - link - run -.....
* lots of modules
* I was getting tired of teaching c++! Bored teacher = bad instruction.

This may be a dumb thing to ask, but besides the penalty for dynamic
typing, is there any other real reasons that Python is slower than Java?

A very very basic UTF-8 question that's driving me nuts:
If I have this in the beginning of my Python script in Linux:
#!/usr/bin/env python
# -*- coding: UTF-8 -*-
should I - or should I not - be able to use non-ASCII characters
in strings and in Tk GUI button labels and GUI window titles and in
raw_input data without Python returning wrong case in manipulated

Hi All,
I am the current author of the Astro-Sunrise perl module
http://search.cpan.org/~rkhill/Astro-Sunrise-0.91/Sunrise.pm
and was wondering if it would be worth while to convert it to python.
First off, I have never programmed in python. I would like to use
this project to learn python. I was wondering if there was a
"How to program python for perl programmers" Kinda
like what is different between the two, pitfalls for perl...

Hello:
I'm running python under cygwin and need to find the drive letter.
Cygwin has a way of calling my drives by a name relative to the Cygwin
directory, so I get things like /home/user rather than
/cygdrive/g/cygwin/home/usr, etc. How can I find the letter of the
drive, or in the above example, the letter 'g'?
My program needs to run on an external media that comes with Cygwin on
it. I have no control over what drive is assigned to...

The company I work for is about to embark on developing a commercial
application that will cost us tens-of-millions to develop. When all is
said and done it will have thousands of business objects/classes, some
of which will have hundreds-of-thousands of instances stored in a DB.
Our clients will probably have somewhere between 50-200 users working
on the app during the day, possibly in mutiple offices, and then a
large number of batch...

Hi all,
I have recently released version 0.0.20 and 0.0.21 of Shed Skin, an
optimizing Python-to-C++ compiler. Shed Skin allows for translation of
pure (unmodified), implicitly statically typed Python programs into
optimized C++, and hence, highly optimized machine language. Besides
many bug fixes and optimizations, these releases add the following
changes:
-support for 'bisect', 'collections.deque' and 'string.maketrans'

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...
