How can I have tooltips for buttons of a toolbar
or for control items of a dialog?
Does such feature exist at all?

You can use the Pmw.Balloon widget to do this.

For Pmw (Python Mega Widgets), see: http://pmw.sourceforge.net/

John Grayson's book 'Python and Tkinter Programming' (see
http://www.manning.com/grayson/index.html) has some examples which use it.

The code in the book can be downloaded from

The problem is the following: After the dialogbox is started, the main application window comes again to top and the dialogbox is covered by the window of the main application and must be "fetched" again via the taskbar to continue. Is there a way to "force" the dialogbox...

Was looking at PEP 3108, http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-3108/ , Is it just me or others also think that it would be a major loss to remove tkinter from the python core? PEP 3108 starts off with: Each module to be removed needs to have a justification as to why it should no longer be distributed with Python. then goes on with,

Hello. I'm a complete newbie trying to learn Python. I decided to try some Tkinter examples, including the one from the library reference, but they don't seem to do anything! Shouldn't there be, like, a dialog? I'm running Windows XP and using IDLE. You can assume my version of Python is the latest.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. ...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For...
