PL/Perl: can you tell that your code is inside a function?

We're trying to eliminate possible problems with our PL/Perl code base.
Some of the functions use locally authored modules that make database
connections; thus, we have PL/Perl code running in a database backend
that is itself making a connection to another backend. The only problem
we seem to be having is with some change occuring to a signal handler
(SIGALRM to be specific).

What I'd like to be able to do is to change the low-level module to do
something like ...

unless (running_inside _pl_perl) {
local($SIG{ALRM });
...
}

How can I test to see if the code is indeed running within PL/Perl?
