PgSQL8 beta4 ODBC, JDBC and WinXP sk_SK

Hello folks,

I have installed PgSQL8 beta4 via pginstaller to WinXP. I must tell
you I am more familiar with Linux, so maybe my problem is trivial to
solve:

I made myself a table with PgAdmin III (I was lazy to use psql) that
I tried to reach via ODBC. I created connection to my database,
supplied a user, server, etc., all that was needed.

I tried to test the ODBC bridge via OpenOffice. After setting
everything as it had to be, I got something like column 'oid' does
not exist. So I tried to access the data from MS Word. I got
something like unable to access the data or no data was there in the
db (I am sorry, I do not remember things that well and was in
Slovak).

After this I tried JDBC via OpenOffice. I was always getting
something like unable to load driver in spite of setting everything
as described at jdbc.postgresql .org, e.g. adding the jdbc driver to
the classpath, specifying org.postgresql. Driver as the driver class,
entering jdbc:postgresql ://localhost:5432/myDB.

Am I doing something wrong? If so, what?

Thanks

Zoltan

Hello,

i installed the new Beta. And first everything seams to work fine.
But sometimes I get this error Message:

(FATAL: terminating connection due to administrator command
server closed the connection unexpectedly
This probably means the server terminated abnormally
before or while processing the request.)

With Beta3 I never got this Message.

What's going wrong there?

Greetings,
Stefan Sturm

I have a problem updating date values using Java via JDBC-ODBC to Access. <snip rs.updateTimestamp(theIndex, theTimeStamp); rs.updateRow(); <snip> (where theTimeStamp is a valid Java Timestamp and theIndex is the column index in the resultset.) is the way specified in the Java API. Shocks. Today I came to learn that Suns jdbc-odbc bridge driver isn't meant for serious purposes; it's experimental. I already knew it isn't thread safe, but didn't think of this as problematic for the relatively simple system I'm using it. However, I suspect there are other issues. Currently I'm stuck with a query which takes less than one second if I run it somewhere in my program's main thread, while it takes easily 40 seconds when I...

Hello folks, I am trying to install pgsql 8 beta 2 via pginstaller. dev 2 and dev 3 do the same - none of these complete the installation process. I tried to compile beta 3 via mingw, the installation failed - initdb says my time zone supports leap seconds (sk_SK, GMT+01). I set the time zone to something else, nothing helps. Any idea, anyone?

Hello ! The RC2 is great but : I use an other filesystem for the data. So I have C:\Program file\PostgreSQL... and I have F:\PostgreSQL\8.0.0-beta4\data. In the file C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.0.0-beta4\data\postgresql.conf I modify the files locations : data_directory = 'F:/PostgreSQL/8.0.0-beta4/data' hba_file = 'F:/PostgreSQL/8.0.0-beta4/data/pg_hba.conf' ident_file = 'F:/PostgreSQL/8.0.0-beta4/data/pg_ident.conf'.

"The designers of ODBC aimed to make it independent of programming languages, database systems, and operating systems." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ODBC) 1- Does it mean that all (or most) programming languages can connect to a database directly using ODBC? or should there be a converter between programming language and the ODBC? for example how can we connect to oracle or mysql with an application written by C++ or Perl ? 2- What is...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
