Hi there,
I got a program to write data to a randomly accessed file (the program
moves file pointer to a certain position of the file according the
current "keyword" and then writes data). It compiles and runs in Win2K
and various Unix and Linux systems. The main program is in Fortran,
calling a data writing library writen in C++.
The weird thing is, it takes much longer elapse time (wall-clock time)
than CPU time (e.g., 20 min vs. 2...

Fellas!!
This is a very complicated one and it took me a few days to figure out
exactly what's going on, but here's the final story:
I have a production environment running on .NET with a SQL Server
(2000, SP3). The SQL Server is on a dedicated Proliant computer with
2GB RAM (the actual SQLServer.exe process has dynamic memory
assignment and can reach up to 1.6GB RAM). Nothing else is running on
that specific computer.

Hi,
Any suggestions on the following as I've kind of run out of ideas.
I have 2 servers which are the same spec ie box, processor etc. The
only difference I can tell is that the production box has raid setup
but the test box hasn't (I think).
I have created a stored procedure to insert 10k rows into a dummy table
with two columns.

Hello,
we are running DB2 UDB EEE Version 7.2 Fixpack 12 on a two machine
Windows 2000 Advanced Server Cluster in a dss environment.
Some dynamic sql statements for etl processes and even some for online
user queries switched overnight from some minutes runtime to a few
hours or "never come back" statements.
We didn't change a single database or instance parameter. Even the

Hi,
I have a large table (about 50G) which stores data for over 7 years. I
decided to split this table up into a yearly basis and in order to
allow minimum changes to the applications which access this table, I
created a union all view over the 7 yearly tables.
What I have noticed is that queries against the union all view is
considerably slower than queries against the original table. When I ran
db2batch, I noticed cpu usage was higher...

To those that have been around Access long enough, I'm sure that
insight can be shared as to what aspects of computer processing speed
improves its performance. Perhaps in some respects even sufficient to
partially offset an inadequate or poor database design. Also, and using
Access 97 as a starting point, have there been significant
changes/improvements in performance of the later versions of Access?
Assuming that a system has adequate...

Hi,
I'm currently developing an application that uses a lot of
computational power, disk access and memory caching (to be more exact:
an information retrieval platform). In these kind of applications the
last thing that remains is bare performance tuning.
So for example, you can do an 'if then else' on a bit like a 'case/
switch', an 'if/then/else' and as a multiplication with a static
buffer. Or, you can do sorting with an inline...

Hello everyone,
I have several physical file and I want to use file map
(MapViewOfFileEx) to map the file into memory to improve performance.
Each file is about several hundred M bytes. All the memory mapped
files are kept open during my application.
The mapping is successful, but the strange thing is,

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

The next Access Europe User Group meeting will be on Wednesday 1 May 2024 starting at 18:00 UK time (6PM UTC+1) and finishing by 19:30 (7.30PM).
In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
Adolph will...
