More general datafiles ?

Hi ...

I'm sorry if this have been asked many times, but it just seem like a
good approach to me, at least :-)

Is it not possible to design the database files in PG in a way that they
are extentible by nature, at least in one direction (upgrade). This have
been done with taged files (tiff, asn1, amiga) before, and sounds like a
nice way to deal with this problem anyway.

This will make it possible for a new database to insert it new control
data, when it reads the data, and insert it on the flight. The only
thing needed is a possibility to read the old data and insert a
reasenable default for future access.

Is this too primitive or just a to heavy a burden for postmaster ?

Have this been possibility been descused before ?

In the context of LATEX, some Pythonista asked what the big successes of Lisp were. I think there were at least three *big* successes. a. orbitz.com web site uses Lisp for algorithms, etc. b. Yahoo store was originally written in Lisp. c. Emacs The issues with these will probably come up, so I might as well mention them myself (which will also make this a more balanced

Few more notes on the language. I don't know if I can really suggest improvements to the language... but I hope to learn something :-) I think some things are better in Delphi/Pascal (like the := for assignments instead of = and = for...

What I do not understand, or not clear to me I should say, is how can some people regard Python as a scripting language? In particular the JAVA crowd. Unless my understanding is off, and from what I can gather from googling, is that Python is compiled implicitly into bytecode then read into the interpreter, and in JAVA you must compile explicitly before it is interpreted, both have virtual machines, so why such a label since there is...

Hello, I am trying to clean up a database I inherited. I have an 80GB SQL 2000 database with 20 datafiles each 4096 in size. I have been able to remove unneeded data and am now trying to clean up. If I do a Shrink on each datafile would able to recover on average 2gb out of 4g, however I would prefer to have 10 full datafiles and 10 empty. (or better yet 5 full 8GB datafiles and 15 empty)

I was wondering how people would feel if the cmp function and the __cmp__ method would be a bit more generalised. The problem now is that the cmp protocol has no way to indicate two objects are incomparable, they are not equal but neither is one less or greater than the other. So I thought that either cmp could return None in this case or throw a specific exception. People writing a __cmp__ method could do the same.

More praise for 7.4RC2: I've installed 7.4RC2 and restored a fairly complex 20GB database (from 7.3.4) with ~75M rows in 30 tables and 4 schemas, numerous triggers and constraints, procs in plpgsql and plperl. To say that it all works great hugely underestimates the improvements. Thank you! Great work, guys! Here's one comparison of a query that choked 7.3.4 and flies in 7.4RC2:

Right now performance isn't a problem, but this question has me curious: Let's say I have a shopping cart system where there is a "products" table that contains all possible products, and an "cart_items" table that stores how many of each product are in each cart. The obvious (or the first thing that came to my mind) would look something like this: create table products (

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
