php 4 or 5?

Hello Phpeers:

I am new to php, but not new to software development. I want to built a
showcase PHP/MySQL web site to practice and reference my work. Any
suggestions on what PHP/MySQL version combination to start?

Regards,

Timur

May as well start with the latest one. But do check on the version(s) that
may be installed on a particular hosting-service.

Depends on the server you'll host it...

If your host/server supports php5, take the leap. If not, start with
php4 and wait until more hosts support 5. I usually suggest that people
start with the latest stable version, and in this case it's 5.0.2.
However, I haven't seen a lot of support for this from hosts yet.

If you're running your own debian server, you don't have to build from
source, there is already a resource for keeping an up-to-date LAMP
platform at dotdeb.org. I use that for development only right now, but
may be pushing it to production if I don't have any problems in the next
few months.

PHP 5.02 and MySQL 4.xx

If you are into Object Oriented programming you'll love Php5

We had similar dilemma when we had to start a enterprise web
application. Finally after looking at PHP 5 features and code
cleanliness, I've decided not to look back. In some rare cases, some
production servers may not support PHP 5, in that case, you may
downgrade the PHP script using phpSt. Alan's

One thing you might want to consider is wether you will be using ready
made classes/libraries. In that case you'd better check if the
classes/libraries you need run properly under PHP 5. Since there have
been some incompatible changes this might not be the case.

The safer route would be to use PHP 4.3 with the latest version of MySQL.
PHP 5 is still point-zero software. There're still fundamental issues with
the new object model that need to be resolved. And then, of course, there're
your regular bugs and glitches.

Personally, I'd go with the latest release of PHP5 and PostgreSQL 8.

Having seen firsthand what jerks the developers of PostgreSQL are,
personally, I'd stick with PHP5 and Mysql 4.1

PostgreSQL 8 is still in beta. PHP5 is still only in its early days yet
and it may pay to start developing intially in 4.3.x, if only because
most PHP hosts are still only hosting with 4.3.x and haven't yet moved
to 5.

Just want to note that Postgres and MySQL are not the only open source
RDMBS's out there. Firebird is an excellent database, and also don't
discount (for less critical tasks) the SQLite, embedded in PHP5 itself and
thus *very* fast.

Most of the classes written in PHP 4 will run in PHP 5--but only
in very rare cases it won't. This is obvious thing for any version to
version migration. In anycase, it is not wise to stay behind. In our
case, the project may run upto 6 months, at that time PHP 4 might be
obsolete.
