mysql or mysqli

What is the benefit to using mysqli? How do I determine if my hosting
server supports it? If it doesn't is there something I can do to
implement it, or do I have to ask the hosting company to implement it?

mysqli is OOP, which is quite the phenomenon at the moment

It's not only OOP, but it also allows to easily make use of the more
advanced features of recent MySQL versions, which were not available
some years ago. And then there's also PDO, which I prefer.

Better functionality, like prepared statements, which aren't possible with
mysql.
How do I determine if my hosting server supports it?
phpinfo() should tell wether it's installed.

On VPS's / dedicated servers you can add it yourself, if not (i.e.
'normal' shared hosting), the hosting company would have to do this for
you. If they refuse, flee to a better hosting company.

Am I right in saying it's on PEAR or am I getting muddled up here?

It isn't. PEAR is PHP code, and there are packages which can use mysqli,
and some which try to emulate it using the mysql extention. Nowhere near
the real thing. Ve very aware of the difference between PEAR and PECL.
