Track the email as its being opened or read in gmail or yahoo.

In one of my projects, I've an requirement which goes like this:

Application member compose a HTML mail. Send that newly composed mail to there registered email address with the application. Now from there own email address they send that email to there mailing list. Application needs to track how many time that email has been opened up by mailing list subscribers in the members list area".

This can be achieved by inline javascript or by using 1x1 image src. But the problem is most of the email interfaces will either mark that as spam if it contains inline javascript or they will not allow from there mail interface to make a contact to the application domain to external call. Same goes for 1x1 image too. Mailing list owners will also be upset by getting them tracked as the email interfaces will notify them a script or image is using an other URI call.

Let me know, if I can have a better idea to get the desired result. Your help will be highly appreciated.

I think a better benchmark would be to put a referral link in the email so that you can track how many emails actually get read and acted upon. Knowing how many emails get opened is somewhat of an irrelevant statistic, given that it doesn't cost you anything to send additional emails. What DOES cost money, though, is maintaining mailings to send out in the first place, so you want to make sure that an acceptable number of them are converting.
