Folder name as a GET?

Hello,

I currently have a website and would like to be able to give my members
an alias to access their profile. At the moment, people have to go to
something like www.domain.com/viewmember.php?id=3456, which isn't
practical unless it's through clicking links.

I'd like to be able to give my members the ability to use something
like www.domain.com/myname, which would then forward to the correct
page. The problem I can see is that the server thinks myname is
actually a folder and returns a 404 error.

Does anyone know of a way to do this?

Thanks,

Paul

If you're running apache or something else that supports mod_rewrite, then
you could do it using that relatively easily, just take a little regex and
you'd need a function to fetch the proper account number associated with
the "folder" name. This is how the user URL's are handled at
protempore.org.

Run a google search for mod_rewrite -- for something like this, it should
be fairly straight forward.

If you're using Apache, you can use mod_rewrite to do this. Check one
of the Apache newsgroups like alt.apache.configuration.

Oddly enough, that sentence is the answer to virtually every question.

Found a few articles - the one on the Apache website wasn't terribly
helpful, but I found a tutorial of how to implement just what I was
looking for and after a few hours it's now working :)

Care to share a link to that tutorial? I'm about to do a similar search, but
I suspect you've narrowed it down already.
