Hello,
This is not a troll posting, and I've refrained from
asking because I've seen similar threads get all
nitter-nattery. But I really want to make a decision
on how best to invest my time. I'm not interested on
which language is better in *general*, just for my
purpose. My area of research is in CAD algorithms,
and I'm sensing the need to resort to something more
expedient than C++, bash scripting, or sed scripting.

Given that setuid is a Bad Thing for scripts, what is the general consensus
here on running a Python script via 'sudo' to give it root system access?
Is this reasonably secure, or am I still asking for trouble?

Hello,
given the following situation:
I have a script which is readable and executable by a user, but not
writable.
The users executes the scripts, it reads in a value and based on this value
it computes a result and stores it in a variable.
Can the user read out the value of this variable? If yes, can he be
prevented to do so?

So, I download the latest "stable" tar for perl (5.8.7) and try to compile
it on the Solaris 8 (SPARC) box that I administrate. I try all sorts of
different switches, but I can't get it to compile. I need it to be
compiled with threads.
Anyone have any wisdom on how best to do this?
Here's a transcript of my latest attempt. It's long; you might want to
skip to the bottom, where I try "make" and the fatal errors start
happening.

When I ran a perl script named script.pl which have the the follwing line:
system("echo hostname = $HOSTNAME > /tmp/myinfo");
I have another shell script script.ksh which simply call script.pl within the script. the permission on script.ksh is: -rwsr-sr-x
WHen I ran script.ksh, I got the error message:
Insecure dependency in `` while running setuid at script.pl line 4.
If I do not use $HOSTNAME in script.pl, I have no trouble at all.

I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
