alter database command in Oracle 9i

i want to know

how ALTER DATABASE CLOSE; command is used in oracle 9i and 4 what purpose

One Instance One Database. Once it is Mounted and Opened then you need to shutdown to close it.

Only in a Parallel Server Env you will use Alter Database Close and Open.

ALTER DATABASE CLOSE only permitted with no sessions connected.

If there is at least one more session other than the current one logged into the instance. ALTER DATABASE CLOSE is not permitted.
