Oracle Performance on multiple joins

I have a table heirarchy of around 5 tables. At places where i have to do a search with criteria ranging on all these tables, will it be advisable to have a join on all the tables. A couple of tables can run into million of rows. Is it advisable to do an iterative search by joining two tables and going down the heirarchy (which will end up in selecting more and narrowing down with each subsequent level) or is it better to do a join in one go and get all relevant rows in one single query.

I'm trying to find an optimized solution to my problem. Am looking for any performance data anybody might have on joins going upto six tables.

Any help will be appreciated.
