Hello..
My current architecture consists of a client and server; which are located quite near to each other.....and i am using database links to retrieve / send data from or to the server.
for eg. if i want to select rows from a table in the client database i use
" SELECT * FROM NAMES@DB_LINK_F OR_1 "
But now the distance between the client and server has increased hugely. Assume the distance to be of some 30 Kilometers. So how reliable are the database links for such a long distance. I have an alternative of using XML files transfer by coding in C#.NET 2005. But somehow I am not convinced with the security of XML files and due to some other dependencies on Microsoft Visual Studio.NET .
Please suggest something! Help!

For what reason you are going select the data from that database?
If it is got to be one time process where you need to select data once, then you need not worry about reliability. In case if you are going to communicate with the DB so often, then you can create a private database LINK for your user and then use them. They are ofcurse reliable but again it all depends on the availibility of that database
So far as the client and server are connect via WAN or something else ,you need not bother about the distance. That is not a barrier for the Database links.

Hi Amit n Debasis..
thanks 4 d replies guys..
now....
select statement was just an example....actu ally d server keeps on updating and inserting data on the client database...so yes..it is a quite frequent process...n moreover...i m also pulling the data from clients...so its bidirectional..
about the network....i guess its a WLAN or VSAT or VPN ....anyhow it would surely be a private network....
so in case of multiple clients...what i understand the steps would be:
1. Open connection for client_1 with DBLINK_1
2. Perform operations
3. Close connection
4. Open connection for client_2 with DBLINK_2
5. Perform operations
6. Close connection
---
---
and so on..
as i said the data transfer is bidirectional.. ...so what do you guys suggest...for maximum of 15-20 client databases...loc ated at a long distance from server database..conne cted through some network (assuming network is ideally up)....would the database links be an optimal solution..?
Yes the DBLINKS will be reliable and efficient to use for any number of client connections. In case if there is not much security concerns, then you can go for Public DBLINK which can be used by all the users of the DB to get the data from that different database. Else you need to go for private DB LINK one for each user respectively. And again you should remember proper privileges to be GRANTED to the user, on different objects of that database that you are going to use.
Okkk...
Great then..!
Thanks to all u guys...!
I'll just check it out for the distances n later on i'll post a reply...
Thanks again!

List,
What are the recommended work arounds for cross database foreign keys?
As I understand it transactions are not atomic with the TCL method. I have
a situation that requires a master database and then a separate database for
every subscriber. Subscribers need read/write to both databases. I chose
separate databases because there are 20+ large tables that would require
uid/gid columns, indexes and where conditions to separate...

Hello:
I'm doing some planning on a potential project with which I need
some help. The database at the focus of this question is a
MS Access database that is currently accessed by DAO from a local
webserver. I need to access the same database remotely through
TCP/IP. There will be potentially many transactions coming from
both the web server and remotely, so the solution needs to keep
the data safe in such an environment. However,...

Hi:
Some time ago I developed a program in Access, and separated the database and the program

to change the DB slightlt. This appears to require that I REMERGE the data base and
program, and I have no idea how to do that.
Can someone give me some pointers,...

Hi -
I've been reading the posts for a solution to my query, and realize
that I should ask an "approch" question as well.
We receive our production data from a third party, so my uers import
the data from Excel into the appropriate tables. There are 6
different databases that receive data, though 4 of them only get one
table each.
I have learned how to automate the data import through

Hello, help/advice appreciated.
Background:
I am writing some web scripts in python to receive small amounts of data
from remote sensors and store the data in a file. 50 to 100 bytes every 5 or
10 minutes. A new file for each day is anticipated. Of considerable
importance is the long term availability of this data and it's gathering and
storage without gaps.
As the remote sensors have little on board storage it is important that a

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
