Calling a webservice from a browser

I would like to call my webservice from a browser using a GET method. I know
I could write a SOAP client, but I do not want to do that. Surely something
simple like below should be possible:

http://localhost/VirtualDir?Method=M...arameter=Value

However, this is not working for me. The following msdn reference suggests
it should be possible to do this:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/45fez2a8.aspx

the suggestion by the reference is that I should use something like:

http://localhost/VirtualDir/MyMethod?Parameter=Value

However, it does not work for me either. The error message returned is:
"Request format is unrecognized for URL unexpectedly endind in '/MyMethod'".

Thanks for any help.
