Enterprise Templates

I am confused with Microsoft Distributed Application
Enterpirse Templates (MS-DAET). The documentation says to
create a solution baded on MS-DAET, make the changes, and
then save as a template. First, when I try to create the
solution, it prompts for the Web and WebService project
virtual directory. Second, I am confused about the Source
Safe integration and teh following article didnt help:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?
url=/library/en-
us/vsent7/html/vxconmanagingenterprisetemplate-
basedprojectsthroughsourcecontrol.asp

Is there a walkthrough that creates a template based on MS-
DAET which incorporates SourceSafe? If not, can anyone
clarify or point me to the doucmentation or books that may
help. I have read almost all MS on-line information for
Enterpise Templates. Although I understand the concepts,
I can't use it.

Hello Shawn,

Thanks for your post. I think more information is needed before moving
forward:

Would you please tell me what kind of Enterprise Template-Based Project you
want to create? In the New Project dialog, there are a number of Enterprise
Template Projects listed under "Project Types" -> "Other Projects" ->
"Enterprise Template Projects".

In addition, I believe the following MSDN article is helpful on "Creating
an Enterprise Application's Initial Structure":
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...us/vsent7/html
/vxconcreatingapplicationsinitialstructure.asp

I look forward to your response.

Have a nice day!

Hi Huang,

Thanks for your reply.

I was trying to use the Distributed App Enterprise Template. The
confusion as I indicated is not about the purpose of the ET but using
them. I created a new solution baded on the Distributed ET which I
called the Template Solution. Then I am supposed to change rules, add
code, help, etc. and then convert it back to a template. I dont know
how to make the solution a template. I assume this makes a template to
make future solutions from.

The other confusion is that when I created the solution it asked for
virtual directory for the web and web service projects. I know how to
deal with this when I create web projects by giving it the name of the
virtual directory that I aready created. To create a virtual directory
I create a folder for the web project under my solution and then create
a virtual directory which points to it.

Virtual directories are the only way to share web projects through
SourceSafe and it is the way SourceSafe recommends. Then the article
that I mentioned shows how to setup the virtual directories for the ET
which is confusing. Lastly, another Microsoft ET article said that ET
can't enforce rules/security when web projects are in virtual
directories rather than application folders!

There really is not one simple walkthrough which ties it all together.
Worse, I purchased some E books from Amazon which were trash trying to
address distributed ET.

I went over Dumish sample which uses ET but there was no description of
how it was created or used.

Regard's
Shawn
