Class Wizard losing my source files!

I've been working thru some MFC sample projects in hopes of converting
myself from an old C programmer to a (still old) C++ Windows programmer :-).
I am using VS 6.0 with SP5 on an XP Home system.

What has happened twice now is that I use Class Wizard to add, for example,
a new message handler function to an existing class. When I click OK, I get
a rather long error message about the wizard being unable to "Rename <long
temp file path> to <my class file path>" and that I might be able to recover
something, yada, yada. But at that point, my .cpp file is completely gone
from my project directory and I can't locate the mentioned temp file either.
No source files were open at the time that this happened.

Any idea how to prevent this? I'd hate to lose days worth of work on my real
project files. I check the MSDN KB, but didn't see anything related to this.

One thing I notice is the use of the term "rename"; the temp file is on C:
and my project directory is on D: and usually you can't really "rename" a
file from one drive to another. But that is probably just a poorly worded
message
