.Net application call a stored procedure directly or should a .Netapplication call a web service, or is WCF better

What is the fastest way to access the database for performance point
of view? Should a .Net application call a stored procedure directly or
should a .Net application call a web service, or use WCF, or is there
another way?

"It depends"? There's not going to be a single answer for this.

Of course, it makes sense that less overhead is better. But what "makes
sense" is not always true.

I vote for a direct call being the fastest. Any of the other solutions
you mentioned would add more baggage.

I am almost certain that I could use HTTP Post/Get to submit XML Web Service call (over SSL as well, if using Version 3 of MSXML2) from an ASP Application? However, would I only be able to call web-service in a an asynchronous mode (with a callback function)? If so, how?

I want to write function to call another function which name is parameter to first function. Other parameters should be passed to called function. If I call it function('f1',10) it should call f1(10). If I call it function('f2',5) it should call f2(5). So far i tried something like CREATE FUNCTION . (@f varchar(50),@m money) RETURNS varchar(50) AS

This is a wildly broad question, so apologies in advance. I developed a very traditional app architecture in Visual Studio 5-6. The basic structure looked like this: GUI >> MTS >> Database The basic idea here was Users talk to the object, the object logs in to the database as itself and does some work. Perhaps I'm being overly dense, but I cannot seem to find a good writeup on the preferred way to implement this in .Net. Can someone...

I am having some major problem with maintaining security for my windows application to the SQL. Currently my application access the SQL using System.Data.SqlClient and all forms use stored procedures. It seems the preferred method is to restrict access to all table and then to set the execute option based on each stored procedure and handle the error in some intelligent way. Now this is causing several problems the first being setting...

To demonstrate my problem, I have a very simple VB Windows application. It has a text box that is used to display a counter, a button to reset the counter, and a timer that increments the counter every second. I remote desktop to the computer hosting this application and run the application. It starts up and displays the counter incrementing every second. If I disconnect the network cable between the two computers for 10 seconds and...

I don't know if this is the right part of the forum. But.... I have been working all night trying to create a web service to call a stored procedure in sql server 2008. The stored procedure calls a linked server to a db2 database that accepts 1 integer and returns 6 variables. The end result would be publish the web service to our sharepoint servers. This is not a problem. I am just trying to wrap my head around it. I know how to call...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
