List to contain objects that derive from a generic base class

1 New Member
I have a generic base class and need a list to contain different types of objects that derive from this.

Public class genericBase<T> where T: ConfigBase{}

I have tried :
List<genericBas e<ConfigBase>> _objectTypes

but when I try to add to it using:
ObjectTypes.Add ((ObjectType<Ob jectConfigBase> )UI);

I get a type conversion exception. Any ideas?

I have two classes: a base class (BaseClass) and a class deriving from it (DerivedClass). I have a List<DerivedClass> that for various reasons needs to be of that type, and not a List<BaseClass>. However, I need to cast that list to a List<BaseClass> and it is not working. The code is below. I get the following exception: "Unable to cast object of type 'System.Collections.Generic.List`1' to type 'System.Collections.Generic.List`1'." ...

I think I must be missing something about generics, perhaps just about the syntax. I'd like to derive a class MyList from System.Collections.Generic so that it can only contain instance of MyItem. No problem with class MyList<T> : List<T> { }

I wasn't sure if I could do this. I believe I am stretching the capability of what generics can do for me but here goes. I have a generic delegate defined as public delegate bool RuleDelegate<T>(T item); In my class my goal is to use a generic list collection to contain my generic delegates. This will allow me to pass this List to another library and call this list of functions. This could provide a new way to build rule base...

Hi, why cant a list<derived*be implicitly castable to list<base*>? Any alternatives other than global operators? thanks in advance, Naren.

I'm working to create a base framework for our organization for web and client-side applications. The framework interfaces with several of our systems and provides the business and data layer connectivity for basic operations and such. I've ran into a snag that I just can't think myself out of. Here's an example: I have an object for a Student called StudentRecord. It has properties such as name, grade, identification number, etc.

The docs for List say "The List class is the generic equivalent of the ArrayList class." Since List<is strongly typed, and ArrayList has no type (is that called weakly typed?), I would assume List<is far better. So, why do people use ArrayList so often? Am I missing somehing? What's the difference between them? Zytan

My problem is the subject line. Basically, my thinking was that, given class TestSpec1 inherits from class TestBase, since I can do this... Dim tst As TestBase = GetTestObj() Function GetTestObj() As TestSpec1 Return New TestSpec1 End Function

Hello, The code below represents a singly-linked list that accepts any type of object. You can see I'm represting the Data variable a System.Object. How would I update this code to use generics instead of System.Object. I want the code in Form1_Load to remain exactly the same, but in the background I want to use generics. I'm trying to get a better understanding of how it works and I'm a little stuck.

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules. He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms. Adolph will...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
