Encoding a StreamReader.

12 New Member
Im trying to read a xml-file with a StreamReader. For the moment I'm using the following code.
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. streamReader = new StreamReader(stream, System.Text.Encoding.Default);
  2. string feedData = streamReader.ReadToEnd();
  3.
I'm using System.Text.Enc oding.Default so that I can get some swedish characters working. But I'm having problem when reading a xml-file that's encoded with UTF-8. In the beginning of the xml-files you have the encoding for the file, so I have tried this code:

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. streamReader = new StreamReader(stream, System.Text.Encoding.Default);
  2. string feedData = streamReader.ReadLine();
  3. if(feedData.indexOf("UTF-8") != -1)
  4.    streamReader = new StreamReader(stream, System.Text.Encoding.UTF-8);
  5.
  6. string feedData += streamReader.ReadToEnd();
  7.
My plan was to read the first line, check if it's encoded with UTF-8 and then change the stream. This doesnt work at all... Is there anyway you can change the encoding for a stream once it's initialized or can you encode the string afterwards?

Hi guys, I have the following code that retrieves a webpage. My problem is getting it to use the right encoding. I've tested it against a danish page, but it won't show the danish characters. When I set it to sniff the encoding (using sr = New System.IO.StreamReader(strm, True) ) it sets it to UTF8, but when I browse the page using MSIE with auto-selection of encoding, it uses Western European (and displays the danish chars correctly).

Hi, I have double byte characters in the content that I am returning using Web Services. However, the encoding in the xml file returned by Web Services is utf-8 and I am unable to read the content, not even by changing browser encoding setting to the appropriate one. I implemented SoapExtension (called EncodingExtension) to rewrite the xml to change the encoding="utf-8" to encoding="windows-1252" in BeforeDeserialize SoapMessage...

We have an application that uses UTF8 everywhere to load / save / process documents. One of our clients is having a problem with BIG Encoded files being trashed after running through our app. Indeed I have verified that if I go to a website in Taiwan and save the file in BIG5 and then just load / save the file with a UTF8 text reader / write some bytes are modified. How can I correct this? It was my understanding the UTF8 was...

Hi, I am puzzled by the following and seeking some assistance to help me understand what happened. I have very limited encoding knowledge. Our SAP system writes out a text file which includes German characters. 1. When I use StreamReader(System.String filepath) without specifying an encoding method, the German characters such as Ä are lost when I do a ReadLine()

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
