Trace to file just doesn't seem to be working

2 New Member
Hi guys,

I'm trying to get to grips with the System.Diagnost ics.Trace class, and I just can't get any output to go to file. Whenever I use a TextWriterTrace Listener, all I ever get is an empty file. For example, the following simple app:

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. using System;
  2. using System.Diagnostics;
  3.
  4. namespace Test
  5. {
  6.     class Test
  7.     {
  8.         static void Main(string[] args)
  9.         {
  10.         Trace.Listeners.Add(new ConsoleTraceListener());
  11.         Trace.Listeners.Add(new TextWriterTraceListener("trace.txt"));
  12.         Trace.WriteLine("blah");
  13.         }
  14.     }
  15. }
correctly puts "blah" out to the screen, and creates a file called "trace.txt" , but the file is empty.

I've tried both from VS 2005 and just building on the command line, and I've tried with both .NET 2.0 and going back to 1.1. I've tried giving Everyone full permissions on the directory in question. Anyone have any ideas?

Cheers,

- Chris

In the Application_OnStart event in global.asax, my code calls an AlertService which creates a System.Timers.Timer() object. So this service doesn't actually run in conjunction with a specific aspx page, apparently. When the timer's Elapsed event handler fires, it calls some other classes I have written. These classes output some Trace statements that you can view if an aspx page calls them, but I can't seem to figure out where the Trace...

Hi all, I am about to distribute an A97-runtime app. which will be used on a LAN by approx. 30 users. The network is pretty good, but there are a few managers who have wireless laptops... Of course they also want to access the db. I am a bit afraid of possible corruption due to the wireless connections. ==> Do I have to be afraid indeed? If so, what is the best way to deal with this? Should I trace the wireless connections...

Hi All, Can Python parse a trace file created with MS SQL's profiler? There are a few thousand lines in the trace file and I need to find the insert statements and the stored procedures. Unfortunately, I am not an SQL guru and was hoping Python could help. Any pointers are appreciated. Thanks!

Hi all, I'm trying to use the Trace class to log messages to a simple text file. I need to be able to provide a custom filename to be used. I've created a TextWriterTraceListener and added it to the Trace.Listeners collections but nothing ever seems to get written to the file. The file does get created, but calling the Write methods doesn't seem to do anything.

I am embedding Python in a MSVC++ (2005) application. The application creates some environment and then launches a Python script that will call some functions exported from the MSVC++ application. I want to be able to debug the Python script by using a debug server, like Winpdb (winpdb.org). I use ActivePython 2.5.2.2, Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, and Winpdb 1.3.8.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
